2025 First Half Outstanding Employee Interview - Lee Chi-soo, Assistant Manager, ‘Building a Stable Infrastructure Through Comm
We conducted an internal interview with Lee Chi-soo, Assistant Manager of IT Infrastructure Technology Team 1, who was selected as the best employee of the first half of 2025 at CloudNetworks. We introduce the interview content that reflects his experiences of thinking and challenging himself in the field to design and operate customers' infrastructure stably, as well as his sense of mission as an engineer at CloudNetworks. 🏆CloudNetworks Internal Interview - IT Infrastructure Technology Team 1 Lee Chi-sooQ. Please introduce yourself and your current team.A. Hello, I am Lee Chi-soo from CloudNetworks' IT Infrastructure Technology Team 1. Our team is specialised in IT infrastructure technology and is broadly divided into Citrix (Netscaler), server, and OS parts. I am part of the server division, where I am responsible for servers, storage, and SAN switches. Q. Can you explain what a SAN switch is?A. A SAN switch (Storage Area Network Switch) is a switch that relays data transmission in a SAN, which is a dedicated high-speed network that connects servers and storage devices. It is a switch that can connect storage devices like a network, and plays a key role in infrastructure configuration.Q. What motivated you to join CloudNetworks?A. I joined the company in August 2023, and this is my second company. I was recommended by a senior colleague from my previous company. I have approximately four years of total work experience, and I have always been involved in server hardware-related work. At my previous company, I had a strong desire to learn more about technology, but my work was primarily focused on delivery tasks, which involved a lot of physical labour. I felt that there was insufficient support for testing and exploring technical aspects, which was disappointing. I decided to join CloudNetworks after hearing that they provide extensive technical support.Q. What was the most engaging project or task you worked on during the first half of the year?A. I was most engaged in a banking project during the first half of the year. It was a project with many technical requirements, from PoC to delivery and environment configuration, due to schedule delays. It was a comprehensive infrastructure construction project that included networking and security. I was responsible for schedule coordination, task planning, and technical tasks in areas requiring server-related expertise as a hardware PL sub.Q. Please share a challenging moment and how you overcame it.A. The most challenging project was the “water-cooled server” project. This project involved developing our company's water-cooled servers for the financial sector and selling them to customers. The project had already begun, but it was still in the internal testing phase when I joined the company and took on this role. Personally, I have an interest and hobby in water-cooled servers and overclocking, so I am continuing with this project. In the financial sector, processing speed is extremely important, and water-cooling technology can significantly enhance CPU performance. A water-cooled server uses a circulation system where water flows through tubes connected to the equipment to cool it down. This reduces the temperature by 10–15 degrees compared to conventional servers, thereby improving performance. We have conducted professional tuning for each server through overclocking settings. There are few companies in Korea that perform overclocking, but the speed we have achieved is quite high, resulting in very high customer satisfaction. The performance improvement is outstanding, and we are seeing sustained demand.Q. How did you feel when you heard the news about the award?A. I didn't expect it at all, so at first, it didn't feel real. On one hand, I was happy, but on the other hand, I felt a sense of responsibility for everyone's attention. However, I was truly happy to receive this recognition from the company and get a holiday. It was an experience I had never had before, and winning the award again this year after last year makes it even more meaningful.Q. What do you think is the reason you were selected as the Best Employee this year, following last year's Outstanding Employee award? A. I think one reason is that I interact with other teams through clubs and talk a lot, and I enjoy supporting their work. As the president of the climbing club and a member of the bowling club and VOC (Voice of Cloud, a singing club), I naturally communicate with other teams and provide extensive support to them. When technical support is needed for server delivery, I go to the site, and when other departments need to install solutions such as Splunk and QueryFy on servers, I am asked to do the basic work. There are many tasks that require servers, so I often receive requests from other teams when they have hardware problems. I enjoy doing this kind of support work, so I try to help out as much as possible.Q. Have you experienced any growth or changes since joining the company?A. The biggest change is that my communication skills with customers have significantly improved. While working on new projects, I have gained more technical knowledge and a stronger sense of responsibility. The company has high expectations for me, and the support and resolution of requests have been well-managed, allowing me to work positively. In my previous job, I often worked alone, which was stressful, but now, requests are actively addressed, such as working in pairs. I feel that many issues can be resolved through communication. I also think the company structure is excellent. Communication with the sales team is open, so if any issues or challenges arise on-site, we can immediately discuss and find solutions. The company supports me in pursuing the work I want to do, and provides extensive technical support, such as arranging training with sales engineers or providing equipment for testing. Q. Do you have your own work routine or way of working?A. In the office, I start the day by having coffee with my team members, sharing any updates, and then getting to work. I do rough drafts of documents at the office and save more focused document work for home. Field work accounts for a very high proportion of my work. In June, for example, I spent about half the month on-site, and in May, I was out on field visits almost every day except for three or four days. Troubleshooting is my main responsibility, and I also frequently visit sites in advance to provide technical support. Since the customer's critical operations are at stake on-site, I always strive to work meticulously.Q. Is there anything you would like to say to your team members or colleagues?A. Since last year, we have been very busy and worked hard on new solutions such as OLVM (Oracle Linux Virtualization Manager) and NetScaler VPX. I hope that by the end of this year, the solutions will be stabilised, and we can all work together happily.Q. What are your goals or challenges for the second half of 2025?A. I believe I have completed the necessary certification studies for this year, so I am considering documenting the technical projects I am working on internally and sharing them with engineers. I would like to share as much as possible. Personally, I am working on automating work processes, and with my two years of experience in web development, I believe I can apply these technical skills to my current role.Q. How would you describe your attitude toward work or the values you hold important in one sentence?A. My mission is to become an engineer who creates infrastructure that provides customers with a sense of stability, based on communication. While engineers need to explain things verbally and technical skills are important, I believe that communication is the foundation that allows us to demonstrate our capabilities through actions. I believe that the stability customers feel depends on how engineers approach their work.Q. What does ‘communication-based’ mean specifically?A. Given the nature of my work, troubleshooting is a major part of my job, and I often visit sites in advance to provide technical support. While most of the information I need is shared via email, I often encounter situations on-site that differ from what I expected, which makes communication with customers crucial. I strive to clearly distinguish between what can and cannot be supported and communicate this immediately.✏️Editor's note: Through this interview, we gained insight into why Lee Chi-soo has been selected by his colleagues for two consecutive years. As the first interviewee for the internal interview, he must have felt a lot of pressure, but his proactive attitude stood out, as he prepared his answers to the pre-interview questions thoroughly and willingly agreed to have his photo taken and his real name disclosed. At the end of the interview, his remark, ‘I hope to see an interview with an outstanding employee next time,’ also revealed his warm-heartedness toward his colleagues. Through this interview, we could see his true character: successfully leading a specialised and challenging project like the water-cooled server by connecting it to his personal interests, while contributing to the company's overall communication and collaboration through support for other teams and club activities. He concluded his first internal interview with a bright smile in response to his colleagues' encouragement during the photo shoot. We look forward to sharing more interviews with diverse members of CloudNetworks in the future.
